Quimper, March 17 ("Le Figaro" correspondence). -- Do the U.F.O. (Unidentified flying objects) exist? If so, where do they come from? Why?
To answer these questions, the National UFO Research Commission (C.N.R.) and the Group for the Studies of the Air Phenomena (G.E.P.A) which is chaired by Mr Rene Fouère [sic, Fouéré], organized a symposium in Quimper, that gathered more than five hundred people.
This demonstration was held in an area where some have said to have listed about fifty U.F.O these latest years, among them a "flying triangle" last February above Quimperlé, three saucers above the building site of the Ile Longue in August 1970, six luminous spheres above Riec-sur-Belon in September 1970. It was a plea in favour of the Unidentified Flying Objects.
Mr Christian Sévère, secretary of the C.N.R. on U.F.O, stressed in a short opening speech the conformism of our society that rejects this kind of phenomena. Then, Mr Rene Fouère quoted several statements of astronomers believing in the U.F.O. and made a call: "isn't it setting a limit to science to merely claim that what we do not understand does not exist? Let us remember the story of Galileo."
