A "Flying Saucer Investigation Commission" - a private organization formed in Melbourne by a group of ten people, almost all members of the Astronomical Society - has just published the results of its year-long investigation in Australia.
Conclusion: flying saucers have an "objective existence." They are, the final report states, "real objects and not optical illusions."
The members of the Investigation Commission interviewed 55 people who claimed to have seen saucers, and here is their assessment:
Four "flying objects" were meteors, one was a balloon, another a handful of grass carried by the wind, two were jet planes, and 47 other sightings could not be explained.
The spokesperson for the Commission specified that the 47 unexplained sightings fell into four groups:
1. Six bright objects shaped like cigars were seen at night while in motion.
2. Fifteen saucers or discs spinning on their own axes, seen in pairs. Witnesses who saw these discs at low altitude reported that the top part appeared to rotate. These craft had portholes.
3. Six bright luminous spots crossing the sky, hovering motionless for a minute or two, appearing and disappearing just as suddenly.
4. Twenty sightings of small, bright objects, initially motionless, then flying off at high speed. In daylight, their surfaces gleamed in the sun like polished metal.
The Commission’s report notably states: "It is much easier to say that these objects do not exist than to say what they are. It is encouraging to note that authorities have recently been taking the issue much more seriously. The Commission is convinced that these objects have an objective existence. They have been seen in too many distant locations, at very different times, and by too many healthy and trustworthy witnesses for their existence to be dismissed."
According to the Commission, none of the theories put forward so far provides a generally satisfactory explanation of the nature and origin of the saucers. Until irrefutable evidence of their existence is found, we must keep an open mind and discuss the issue impartially. Solving the mystery requires new, intensified, and meticulous research.

In Canada, the flying saucer detection station located near Montreal has been shut down. Reason: negative observation results.
