Many residents of the Portugal city of Braga, convinced of a Martian invasion, fled in panic during a weekend broadcast of Orson Welles's science-fiction radio play War of the Worlds. The broadcast marked the 50th anniversary of the drama's premiere in the United States, which caused similar widespread panic.
