Colenso High School student Bill Appleby, 16, of 85 Lathame Street, Napier, saw a strange object hovering in the sky at 5:30 this morning.
"I first saw the object from the veranda in front of our house, he said, I was looking towards the sea when I saw a dazzling light that kept going up and down. It headed west and then returned to its initial position."
"Then the object rose to nest among the clouds and it looked like a dumbbell which stood on one end with two dazzling lights, and between them another soft red light which pulsed."
Bill stated that he saw the object again "and this time it appeared to be hovering about 100 feet above Bluff Hill. To tell the truth, I must have observed the object for 5 to 7 min."
Bill says he thought he had seen a UFO "if such things exist" over Poraite Hill some time ago.
