WHITE SANDS, N. M., June 27 (AP) -- Lt. Col. Harold R. Turner says "flying discs" reported seen in several western areas Wednesday night may have been jet airplanes on routine flights. The commandant said jet planes have circular exhausts pipes and these when heated might give an illusion of discs.
The area over which the "flying saucers" were reported seen widened to southwestern New Mexico today.
Dr. R. F. Sensenbaugher, Silver city dentist, said he and members of his family saw a disc about half the size of a full moon sail out of the northern sky around 8 p.m. Wednesday and disappear over the southen horizon in a few seconds.
Sensenbaugher said the disc was extremely brilliant and that it did not appear to be traveling at high speed.
First reports of such discs [...] [Kenneth Arn]old, a flying Boise, Ida., businessman, reported seeing nine such objects, each as big as a DC-4 passenger plane.
Similar reports also came from Oklahoma and Idaho.
