Brief summary of the event and follow-up:

In 1999, someone used the NUFORC UFO sighting web report form to claim that on July 1978 at 03:00 p.m., at Cold Water Creek, 15 miles southeast of Quincy, California, USA, at their mining claim called the Jolly Roger, he was panning for gold when "I felt someone watching me, so I looked up and saw this craft, it was dark in color, and had 2 beings in it..They didn't seem to be wearing helmets. We've had government jets flying over looking for marijuana plants, and I assumed that was what it was, so I waved at them, though at the time, they were looking forward, and not at me..Then the craft took off without a sound.."

In the report's headline, the man said the shape of the craft was a triangle, it was black, suspended about 150 feet from him, and the sighting lasted two minutes.

A black object suspended about 150 feet from me, with 2 beings. They appeared to be watching me. I waved, and it zoomed off.

I was panning for gold, at Cold Water Creek on our mining claim called the Jolly Roger. I felt someone watching me, so I looked up and saw this craft, it was dark in color, and had 2 beings in it..They didn't seem to be wearing helmets. We've had government jets flying over looking for marijuana plants, and I assumed that was what it was, so I waved at them, though at the time, they were looking forward, and not at me..Then the craft took off without a sound..

Albert Rosales indicates in his catalogue that in Cold Water Creek, California, on July 1978, at 1500, the lone witness was panning for gold when he looked up to see a hovering dark object. Inside through an opening he could see two humanoid figures looking down on him. The witness waved at the figures, but there was no response, the craft then flew silently away.

Albert Rosales indicates that the source is "NUFORC."

Points to consider:

See the List of Issues. It seems there is some contradiction between the 2 minutes duration of the sighting and the initial interpretation that it could have been a jet plane: no jet plane at 150 feet would be silent, nobody sensible would think a silent craft at 150 feet could be a jet, specially if it did stay for two minutes.

The NUFORC web report form, which is the primary source, can by used by anyone to write any story, true or invented.
