JUNE 21 1978, MINDORO ISLAND, PHILIPPINES, JACINTO FETALVERO:

Brief summary of the event and follow-up:

In 1993, author Jerome Clark, discussing merfolk, said that in the Summer of 1978, Jacinto Fetalvero, a fisherman from the Filipines, let slip the secret of a recent fishing success: one moonlight night, he had met a beautiful mermaid, with "amiable blue eyes, reddish cheekds, and green scales on her tail", and she helped him secure a lot of fishes. He was ridiculed and did not want to talk about it anymore.

By trace of press, I learned that it reportedly occurred on June 21, 1978, off the coast of Mindoro, that Jacinto Fetalvero was from the coastal city of Sablayan, and that he had said that he had three companions with him when he had met the mermaid.

Narratives:

[Ref. ea1:] "EASTERN HORIZONS":

A Filipino fisherman claimed seeing a mermaid, half-human, half-fish, while fishing under a full moon off a coastal town on Mindoro Island 320 kilometers (200 miles) south of Manila, published reports today said.

The English language newspaper bulletin today said Jacinto Fetalvero of Sablayan coastal town saw the apparition on June 21 while fishing with three companions. He said the sea nymph had amiable blue eyes, reddish cheeks, and greenish scales, [...]

[Ref. jc1:] JEROME CLARK:

The author, discussing merfolk, says that in the Summer of 1978, Jacinto Fetalvero, a fisherman from the Filipines, let slip the secret of a recent fishing success: one moonlight night, he had met a beautiful mermaid, with "amiable blue eyes, reddish cheekds, and green scales on her tail", and she helped him secure a lot of fishes. He was ridiculed and did not want to talk about it anymore.

[Ref. ar1:] ALBERT ROSALES:

Albert Rosales indicates in his catalogue that in Mindanao Island, Philippines, on Summer 1978, at night, Filipino angler Jacinto Fetalvero reported that one moonlit night he had met a beautiful mermaid, with "amiable bluish eyes, reddish cheeks, and green scales on her tail." She helped him secure a bountiful catch. A torrent of ridicule ensued, and Fetalvero thereafter refused to discuss the subject.

Albert Rosales indicates that the source is "Jerome Clark, Unexplained!."

[Ref. hm1:] "HISTORY OF THE MERMAID":

The webmaster provides the same story than [jc1], adding that the source is "unknown" and "Please contact me if you know where this story came from."

[Ref. lc1:] LOREN COLEMAN:

Loren Coleman indicates that in the Summer of 1978, Jacinto Fetalvero, a fisherman from Mindanao Islands in the Filipines, let slip the secret of a recent fishing success: one moonlight night, he had met a beautiful mermaid, with "amiable blue eyes, reddish cheekds, and green scales on her tail", and she helped him secure a lot of fishes. He was ridiculed and did not want to talk about it anymore.

The source is indicated as "Jerome Clark, Unexplained!"

Points to consider:

The place given as "Mindanao Island" in [ar1] and others is obviously an invention.

See the List of Issues. The story, probably an invention of the fisherman or the Press, has obviously nothing to do with UFO matters.

And of course, only fools can believe there are half-fish half-human women in the seas.
