OCTOBER 1965, MONACA, PENNSYLVANIA, USA, A MAN:

Brief summary of the event and follow-up:

In 1974, ufologist Stan Gordon reported in the MUFON Skylook ufology bulletin that WCUFOSG investigator Bob Boyed of Beaver County heard rumors of a 1965 incident and was able to track down the individuals involved.

The incident occurred in October of 1965. The witness wished to remain anonymous. He was returning home from work at 9 p.m., when he noticed a strange object in a hay field near his home in Monaca, Pennsylvania, USA, and stopped his car to observe the object better.

He described it as being about 45 feet in diameter and about 20 feet high, shaped like an upside down bowl, and seemed to be of dull silver color. There were what appeared to be three portholes in the upper part of the object, evenly spaced.

From these openings, soft lights of varying colors were seen. In one porthole, there were dark shadows seen moving about, however, no definite form could be determined.

The object seemed to rest a short distance above the ground on about 8 to 10 beams of light. The witness was sure that they were light sources, since he could see trees though them. After seeing this for a short time, the witness got into his car and went home after his wife with the idea of returning to the scene with her.

When they returned, the object was still in the same position. The man decided to get out of the car to get a better look but his wife was afraid and asked him not to go. He then closed the car door, at which time the object made a sound like gushing air and it started to rise.

As it gained altitude, the light beams retracted, and the witnesses were able to see the bottom of the craft. It was the same color as the rest of the object, except there was a circle in the center about 10 feet in diameter that was darker than the rest of the craft.

The man returned to the scene the next day to see if he could find any signs of the visitor. At the spot where the object had been, he found a metal disc 20 and 1/16 inches in diameter and 1/16 inches thick with a hole in the center and 8 small holes around the plate. He witness took it home and showed it only to his wife and brother-in-law, fearing that others would laugh at his story.

The disc remained outside in his backyard for two years, and then remained in a shed until 1974. The witness never claimed that it fell from the UFO, only that he found it at the same location after the sighting.

WCUFOSG consultants submitted the plate to X-rays diffraction and spectroscopy analysis and found it to be a stainless steel alloy very similar to the 400 series. A quantitative analysis showed that the metal contained 0.4% Cadmium, 8% Chromium, 0.06% Cooper, 53% Iron, 0.03% Magnesium, 2% Manganese, 0.2% Molybdenum, 6% Nickel and 0.5% Silicon. Several chemists and metallurgists who worked on the sample felt that the wear marks around the edge looked to be caused by cavitation, occurring at a seal area where extremely high pressures exist and the seal starts to leak. The analysis showed that the material were all common to Earth.

1965 Pennsylvania sighting

Possible physical evidence located

By Stan Gordon

A 1965 UFO sighting with possible physical evidence was recently uncovered by WCUFOSG investigator Bob Boyed of Beaver County. Boyed while investigating a wave of UFO activity, in August heard rumors of the incident and was able to track down the individuals involved.

The incident occurred in October of 1965. The witness, who wishes to remain anonymous, was returning home from work at 9 p.m. when he noticed a strange object in a hay field near his home in Monaca, and stopped his car to observe the object better.

He described it as being about 45 feet in diameter and about 20 feet high. It was shaped like an upside down bowl, and seemed to be dull silver in color. There were what appeared to be 3 portholes in the upper part of the object evenly spaced. From these openings, soft lights of varying colors could be seen. In one porthole, there were dark shadows seen moving about; however, no definite form could be determined.

The man decided to get out of the car to obtain a better look. His wife was afraid and asked him not to go. He then closed the car door, at which time the object made a sound like gushing air and it started to rise.

As it gained altitude, the light beams retracted, and the witnesses were able to see the bottom of the craft. The bottom was the same color as the rest of the object, except there was a circle in the center about 10 feet in diameter that was darker than the rest of the craft.

The witness returned to the scene the next day to see if he could find any signs of the visitor. At the spot where the object had been, he found a metal disc 20 and 1/16 inches in diameter and 1/16 inches thick with a hole in the center and 8 small holes around the plate. The witness took it home and showed it to his wife and brother-in-law, fearing that others would laugh at his story.

The disc remained outside in his backyard for 2 years, and after that remained in a shed up until now. The witness has never claimed that the metal fell from the UFO, only that it was found at the same location after the sighting.

Consultants of the WCUFOSG submitted the plate to X Ray diffraction and emission spectroscopy analysis and found it to be a stainless steel alloy, very similar to the 400 series. A quantitative analysis showed that the metal contained 0.4% Cadmium, 8% Chromium, 0.06% Cooper, 53% Iron, 0.03% Magnesium, 2% Manganese, 0.2% Molybdenum, 6% Nickel and 0.5% Silicon.

Several chemists and metallurgists, who worked on the sample feel that the wear marks around the edge look to be caused by cavitation. This occurs at a seal area where extremely high pressures exist, and the seal starts to leak. The analysis shows that the material are all common to Earth. The area where the plate was found is in the country and no factories were in the area at the time of the find.

This disc, which measures just over 20 inches in diameter, was found at the site where a UFO was allegedly observed. There is no known direct connection, however, between the disc and the UFO. An analysis of the metal indicates that it was made of materials common to the Earth.

Albert Rosales indicates in his catalogue that in Monaca, Pennsylvania, on October 1965, at 2100, the witness was returning home when he noticed a strange object in a hayfield, and stopped his car to observe it better. It was about 45 ft in diameter and 20 ft high, shaped like an inverted bowl, and dull silver in color. In the upper part were three portholes, in one of which a dark shadow could be seen moving about. The object seemed to rest on 8 to 10 beams of light. The witness drove off and returned with his wife, at which time the object rose vertically and flew off. At the site he later found a perforated disc of stainless steel 20" in diameter.

Albert Rosales indicates as source Stan Gordon, Mufon Skylook #84.

The website indicates that in October 1965, at 21:00, in Monaca, Pennsylvania, USA, an object was observed, occupants of the craft were seen, metallic traces found. One object, about 40 feet across, was observed by one witness on a farm.

Points to consider:

This is an interesting report of an encounter with a craft that does not match an helicopter correctly, because of the 8 to 10 light beams going downwards, for example. It would have been nice if more information, details, sketches and verbatim description by both witnesses had been made available.
