SEPTEMBER 1956, LE HOULME, SEINE-MARITIME, FRANCE, MR. FOLLON:

Brief summary of the event and follow-up:

Mr. Freulon, a ufologist, reported in 1974 in the ufology magazine Lumières Dans La Nuit, that in September 1959, some unknown day, at 11:20 p.m. in Le Houlme, the following sighting took place according to the witness Mr. Follon.

The latter was driving a Solex lightweight popular motor-cycle and was about to cross Barentin when he saw a sharp gleam and thought that it was a barn on fire. While driving though the town of Barentin, he did not see it any more because the city is down in a valley. Then, in a rise, Mr. Follon again saw the strong light, in direction of the plate of Saint-Jean-du-Cardonnay.

He decided to go look at it, and he saw while approaching along the departmental road 13 bis, which goes from Le Havre to Rouen, eight to ten people hidden behind the plane trees which bordered the road at that time.

Within 60 meters from there, was a saucer hovering 80 centimetres above ground-level. It was of aluminum color, its diameter was 12 to 13 meters, its height 9 meters, it had a a small antenna its top.

Three or four human-looking silhouettes seemed carrying out some work, they were seen through four port-holes of approximately 35 by 50 centimeters. They are of normal size, and move from one end to another while appearing very busy.

At the lower part of the small antenna at the top of the saucer, flames of ten centimeters, and of grey-green color, are coming out. At the end of ten minutes, these flames grew until taking a length of seven meters approximately, and a very powerful headlight illuminated at a distance of approximately 300 meters towards the Southern direction, then revealing the trees of a thicket.

A noise which is caused by this machine becomes very strong then, the estimate that it was very strong came owing to the fact that the witness heard it very well whereas it is a little deaf.

The apparatus then took the direction of the South, which it illuminated, while rising at a 45 degrees angle, on a 500 meters distance approximately, then went out of sight at the speed of a jet plane.

During the observation, a car coming from Rouen had its headlights stopped without intervention of its driver, and the car's passengers came out in panic.

Once home, Mr. Follon experienced "a big disorder" which lasted 15 to 20 hours.

[Ref. fr1:] MICHEL FIGUET AND JEAN-LOUIS RUCHON:

The two authors and ufologists indicate that in September 1959, some unknown day, at 11:20 p.m. in Le Houlme, the following sighting took place, , by Mr. Follon and about ten people.

Mr. Follon was driving a Solex [lightweight popular motor-cycle] and was about to cross Barentin when he saw a sharp gleam and thought that it was a barn on fire.

Within 60 meters from there, was a saucer at 80 centimetres above ground-level, not touching the ground.

The authors indicate that the source is an investigation by Mr. Freulon in LDLN #137 pages 13 à 14.

[Ref. go1:] GODELIEVE VAN OVERMEIRE:

The Belgian ufologist indicates that in September 1956, in France in Le Houlme towards 11:20 p.m., Mr. Follon circulated by Solex and was going to cross Barentin when he saw a sharp gleam resembling a barn on fire.

While crossing the city, he did not see anything any more, but in the rise, a strong light was again visible in the direction of the plate of St Jean du Cardonnay. He decided to go look at it, and then saw along the National Road N 13 bis (road from Harbour to Rouen) 8 to 10 people hidden behind the plane trees.

Within 60 meters, was the saucer hovered 80 cm above the ground and had a diameter from 12 to 13 m, a 9 m height, as well as an antenna on the top.

3 to 4 silhouettes of human form visible by port-holes of 35x50 cm approximately seemed to be carrying out some work. From under the small antenna, verdigris flames of ten cm came out. At the end of 10 minutes, these flames grow to reach roughly 7 m, a very powerful headlight illuminates on 300 m of distance towards the south.

The noise caused by this machine becomes very strong, for the witness who is a little deaf hears it very well. The machine rises at a 45° angle on 500 meters and then disappears at the speed of our jet planes.

The witness was disturbed from 15 to 20 hours after this observation.

The Belgian ufologist indicates that the source is M. Figuet and J.L. Ruchon in "Ovni, Premier dossier complet...", Alain Lefeuvre publisher, 1979, page 228.

[Ref. ar1:] ALBERT ROSALES:

Albert Rosales indicates that in Le Houlme, Seine Maritime, France, in September 1956, at 11:20 p.m., M. Follon riding his Solex noticed a bright light across the valley. When he got to the other side he went to look at it. About 60 yards from the road hovered a "saucer" of aluminum color, 40 ft in diameter and 30 ft high, about 3 ft off the ground. It had an antenna on top and below this a row of ports emitting verdigris-green flames; around its equator were windows about 14" x 20" in size. Through these he could see 3 or 4 "silhouettes of human form," apparently of normal stature, passing back and forth, seemingly busy at some task. He watched for 10 minutes, during which a car coming along the road had its headlights put out and its motor stopped. Then the flames from the ports increased to 20 ft in length, a powerful searchlight was directed southward, and the craft, making a loud noise, moved off the south, rising at a 45-degree angle and soon attaining the speed of a jet aircraft.

Albert Rosales indicates that the source is "M Freulon, LDLN # 137", and Humcat 1956-18.

[Ref. ud1:] "UFODNA" WEBSITE:

The website indicates that in September 1956, at 11:20 p.m. in Le Houlme, France, a domed disc with an antenna at its base was seen at a 9 meters altitude, shooting beams. Three human-looking occupants were seen inside through portholes, and the UFO went rapidly to the south. It was seen by "nine witnesses in a town for over 12 minutes (Follon)."

Points to consider:

The data as available to me are perhaps not complete. Nevertheless, they do not seem to allow to totally exclude that the witness in fact saw an helicopter operation.

The first thing is that the occupants, in so far as they are well seen, are described as being silhouettes similar to the human ones and of normal sizes. They are seen through rectangular port-holes of a size compatible with those of heavy helicopters.

The second thing is that the small antenna at the top could be the rotor mast. The flames mentioned at its base constitute an apparent oddity; there are no flames at the base of rotors. But they are wirdly described as being of verdigris color, which is not a color really evoking flames. They are short initially and lengthen at the time of takeoff. Thus I cannot exclude that they were actually the rotor blades, which can actually be verdigris, shine or reflect the light emanating of the interior of the apparatus, and appear short because badly seen and appear longer because their actuation then make them more discernible in the night.

Lastly, Mr. Follon tells of a powerful noise at take off.

This explanation as a confusion whose cause would be a helicopter is nothing certain. But it misses any elements to refute it, it does not seem to have been considered or discussed by or with the witness for what I know, and unfortunately, while it would have been easy to check it or refute it from precise details such as on the precise shape effectice of the craft, the presence or absence of a cockpit at the front, and others such elements, these precise details are not there.

This is why I think that it is possible that a helicopter might have been the cause of the sighting.
