OCTOBER 18, 1954, MOUTIER-ROZEILLE, CREUSE, FRANCE, MRS. ALICE PAQUET:

Brief summary of the event and follow-up:

From a newspaper article of the time and later ufology sources, it appears that in Moutier-Rozeille in the department of the Creuse on October 18, 1954, at 10:00 a.m., one Mrs. Alice Paquet, from Saint-Pardoux-le-Neuf, was keeping cows in the locality "Côte de la Chambre."

At her amazement, she heard a language that she did not understand, a conversation coming from a field of heather. Then she saw two men, approximately 1.80 meters tall, in black or dark blue combinations, leave and approach at approximately 50 meters of her.

One of them turned toward Mr. Blanchon's mill, uttered a shout and made some gesture. Another man then appeared, and walked down in the direction of the small Rozeille river, joined by the two first, and all of them "disappeared."

15 minutes later, Mrs. Paquet's dog started to bark and she saw an apparatus in the shape of a cigar, of dark color, rise without noise and disappear at low speed towards the south-west.

There seems to have been no effort to check whether it was an ordinary helicopter and its crew, possibly because the craft was said to be silent.

Note: The newspaper article above is primarily devoted to another case, I preserved here only the lines briefly mentioning this observation at Saint-Pardoux-le-Neuf (see Badière, October 26, 1954 in the 1954 French flap catalogue for the complete article).

The two authors indicate that in Moutier-Rozeille in the department of the Creuse on October 18, 1954, at 10:00 a.m., Mrs. A, Paquet keeps the cows in the locality "Côte de la Chambre." At her amazement, she hears a language that she cannot understand, a conversation coming from a field of heather. Then two men, approximately 1m80 of height and in black or dark blue combinations, leave and approach at around fifty meters of Mrs. Paquet. One of them turns to the mill of Mr. Blanchon, pushes a cry, accompanied by a gesture. Another men then appears then goes down in the direction from the small Rozeille river, join the two first and all disappear. Fifteen minutes later, Mrs. Paquet's dog start to bark and she sees a machine in the shape of a cigar, of dark color rise without noise and disappears at low speed towards the south-west.

The authors indicate that the sources are La Montagne for October 27, 1954, and the "Catalogue Creuse" by Mr. Giraud and Catinat, investigators of the LDLN group.

A quarter of hour later, Mrs. Paquet's dog started to bark and she saw an apparatus in the shape of cigar, of dark color, rising without noise, and disappear at reduced speed towards the south-west.

The men were approximately 1m80 tall and were dressed of a a black or dark blue combination.

Points to consider:

Often, the "value" of a UFO sighting report is assessed by checking it reliability and its strangeness.

As far a reliability is concerned, there is no reason to believe that Mrs. Paquet invented the story. On the other end, we know nothing of her. Was she a young kid? an older woman? A former Army helicopters pilot, or an illiterate farm woman who never actually saw any helicopters at all, as these craft were not known in 1954 as they are today?

As far as strangeness is concerned, there is no strangeness at all in the story. She heard men who could have been British or Italian: she did not understand the language they spoke. But they were men. One of them called another, they walked away and were lost of sight. There is nothing really strange there. 15 minutes later, the craft is seen. The witness apparently did not say it was a flying saucer of flying cigar. She apparently said it was cigar-shaped: a reasonable description of some helicopter in the distance. She said it flew slowly: no extraordinary speed, no impossible maneuvers. She said it was silent. But nothing is said about the distance it was, and a distant helicopter can seem silent if the wind blows in the appropriate direction.

Thus, as the report does not give any reason that the occupants were aliens or that the apparatus was not a helicopter, the incident could have been caused by some NATO airmen returning to their landed helicopter and taking off.
