In the Forties in the United States, one Meade Layne was a "paranormal" buff, talking about "other dimensions of reality" the world of the spirits, ghosts, ectoplasms, dematerializations, materializations and so on.
He founded a research society on these matters, which he said had bona fide scientists as members, whom he designated only by code numbers, so that the malevolent mainstream scientists do not harass them.
Once the topic of the flying saucers had been popularized in 1947, he naturally begun to research this subject, and discovered that these flying saucers really did not come from other planets, but from the fourth dimension, inhabited by the "Etherians", beings made up of a form of matter that we cannot touch, who build the flying saucers by the force of the thought, and live in "the etheric counterpart of the planet Venus" and other such interdimensional places.
The reason that they now visit mankind so often is that the sun soon will explode into a supernova.
Meade Layne had made these discoveries on the true nature of the flying saucer by the intermediate of a psychic named "Probert". "Probert" had been contacted by ancient spirits, such as "The Yada Di'Shi'ite", an Oriental chap who had lived 500.000 years ago as a citizen of an Himalayan civilization, as well as one friend of Gallilée, and a deceased German scientist.
In 1954, the radio host Frank Edwards refers to flying saucers that were rumored to have landed at Muroc AFB, and soon, Meade Layne produced a letter he claimed to be of his friend "Gerald Light", an expert on the occult and an "astral traveller". Light told how he had his time of fun when he saw the humiliation of the "know-it-all" mainstream scientists who scoffed at the etheric theories confronted with the Etherians beings demonstrations of superior techniques. Indeed, Light reported that in company of a Bishop, of a member of the Press and a distinguished economist - people that nobody thought to interview - he had been cleared to visit Muroc Air Force Base where 5 flying saucers of 5 different types had landed, and the Etherian invited the officials on board, including the President of the United States, Dwight D. Eisenhover.
Then, authors of flying saucers books of the lunatic fringe type, from Jimmy Guieu to William Cooper, removed the too-obviously nonsensical tones of the story, carfully avoided giving the sources or the background, and gave birth to the ever re-hashed mythology of the encounter between President Eisenhower and the aliens at Muroc AFB (aka Edwards AFB). Some authors added their share of "short grays" to the plot. other told of "Nordics", and the evidence of the interplanetary encounter it now said to be the allegedly mysterious disappearance of Eisenhower one fine afternoon; which of course explains very well if he went to see the aliens, rather that go to the dentist as others dare to claim.

The "obscurantist researcher" and "metaphysicist" Meade Layne indicated that he received a letter for April 16, 1954 from his friend Gerald Light of CBS:

Gerald Light My dear friends: I have just returned from Muroc [later rename Edwards Air Force Base]. The report is true -- devastatingly true! I made the journey in company with Franklin Allen of the Hearst papers and Edwin Nourse of Brookings Institute (Truman's erstwhile financial advisor) and Bishop MacIntyre of L.A. (confidential names for the present, please). When we were allowed to enter the restricted section (after about six hours in which we were checked on every possible item, event, incident and aspect of our personal and public lives), I had the distinct feeling that the world had come to an end with fantastic realism. For I have never seen so many human beings in a state of complete collapse and confusion, as they realized that their own world had indeed ended with such finality as to beggar description. The reality of the "other plane" aeroforms is now and forever removed from the realms of speculation and made a rather painful part of the consciousness of every responsible scientific and political group. During my two days' visit I saw five separate and distinct types of aircraft being studied and handled by our Air Force officials -- with the assistance and permission of the Etherians! I have no words to express my reactions. It has finally happened. It is now a matter of history. President Eisenhower, as you may already know, was spirited over to Muroc one night during his visit to Palm Springs recently. And it is my conviction that he will ignore the terrific conflict between the various 'authorities' and go directly to the people via radio and television -- if the impasse continues much longer. From what I could gather, an official statement to the country is being prepared for delivery about the middle of May. I will leave it to your own excellent powers of deduction to construct a fitting picture 0f the mental and emotional pandemonium that is now shattering the consciousness of hundreds of our scientific “authorities” and all the pundits of the various specialized knowledges that make up our current physics. In some instance I could not stifle a wave of pity that arose in my own being as I watched the pathetic bewilderment of rather brilliant brains struggling to make some sort of rational explanation which would enable them to retain their familiar theories and concepts. And I thanked my own destiny for having long ago pushed me into the metaphysical woods and compelled me to find my way out. To watch strong minds cringe before totally irreconcilable aspects of “science” is not a pleasant thing. I had forgotten how commonplace things as dematerialization of “solid” objects had become to my own mind. The coming and going of an etheric, or spirit, body has been so familiar to me these many years I had forgotten that such a manifestation could snap the mental balance of a man not so conditioned. Gray Barker tells that it hoped that the approach of Meade Layne's "Borderland Sciences Research Associates" who was "in good faith", were erroneous, because he thought that serious disasters prepared. He also thought that flying saucers came "from the fourth dimension", i.e. "a spectra of the reality which ends in forms of matter that we cannot touch."
Barker continues with numerous many off-hands comments on Meade Layne, indicating that he has "a number of members who have engineers' or scientific diplomas" but that he refers to them by numbers instead of names, since "official science" scoffs at scientific studies of telepathy, other dimensions and "underground civilizations." His association obtains information "from the world of the spirits" and cannot show a "flying saucer of the fourth dimension" in laboratory. Barker ensures that he used to laugh at it, but that "the theories" of Layne are the only ones that can explain the flying saucers. Indeed, thanks to the psychic "Probert", who contacted "Yada Di'Shi'ite", an Oriental who lived 500.000 years ago in an Himalayan civilization, as well as the spirit of Ramond Natalli, "a friend of Gallileo" and professor Luntz, deceased in 1893, Meade discovered that the flying saucers are not from other planets but "Etherian", i.e. of higher entities "who exist in other physical planes" and can send flying saucers in "our" world by "altering their speed of vibration." Etherians build the saucers "by the force of the thought" and materialize saucers thanks to their superior interdimensional psychic powers. They come from "the etheric counterpart of Venus", and other places which are immaterial. They travel faster than the speed of light since they travel by the force of thought. Their arrival in our world indicates that the Sun will soon explode and change into a supernova.
Barker indicates that Layne's mail had become "feverish" just after the landing of flying saucers at Muroc Air Force Base. The association's bulletin "Clip, Quotes and Comments" had reported about these landings, but Barker thinks that somebody in the group had censured certain information on this matter.
Barker thus explains that he asked Layne about what was kept secret, and Layne confided to him by letter that saucers had indeed voluntarily materialized at Muroc AFB, but that he should not be quoted as source of this information so that he does not get into troubles, the President of the USA in person having inspected those saucers.
Barker adds that his "other source of information" reported also about these saucers, the technicians who inspected them turning almost crazy, so advanced was their design.
Gray Barker indicates that a radio host wanted to make all the light on the affair but had been "silenced."
Finally, Barker states that the Press itself had confirmed all that, because he remembers a newspaper article in which it was said that journalist wanted to meet Esisenhower but the latter avoided them.
[Ref. jg1:] JIMMY GUIEU:
The author indicates that he received information from "one of our American correspondents," which is that towards the end of April 1954, at Edward Air Force Base [sic, Edwards] in Southern California, "five spacecrafts of another world are said to have landed..."
He indicates that it was reported by an eyewitness to his American correspondent "of whom we will preserve the anonymity."
He indicates that the eyewitness spent two days at this Air Force Base and that five flying saucers "are said to have landed", they were "of five different types" and their humanoid occupants are said to have made contact with the technicians of the military base. They are said to have obligingly made the American technicians visit their apparatuses they demonstrated their capability to dematerialize and rematerialize.
The eyewitness "reporting these facts" then expected a forthcoming statement by President Eisenhower, but "no declaration of this kind was issued."
Jimmy Guieu indicates that nevertheless, one year later, the U.S. and the Russians "strangely" changed their relations, the Russians "behaved differently with respect to the flying saucers of which they will acknowledge the flight on their territory on several occasions!"
He indicates that this contact between the men from Space and the Earthmen "are said to have been witnessed by three American personalities: a close relation of ex-President Truman; the eminent representative of an important Press agency and a bishop of the Episcopal Methodist Church."
Jimmy Guieu indicates that he easily admits the declaration of the eyewitness according to whom the technicians of Edward Air Force Base were upset by the event and the extraordinary technical evolution of the extraterrestrials beings which had them visit "their discoid spaceships."
Jimmy Guieu regrets not being able to bring proof authenticating this information, "but" Desmond Leslie investigated on the location and endeavored to discover if the event happened or not, and managed to get only "evasive answers" when questioning technicians of the air base, because apparently nobody wanted "to compromise himself in this 'delicate' affair..."
Jimmy Guieu indicates that the Pentagon "denied the information", but he voiced his opinion that the denial should not be believed, since the authorities have excellent reasons to hide the "frightening truth."

The author indicates that in 1954, according to alleged eyewitness accounts, President Dwight D. Eisenhower inspected a variety of alien space vehicles on a U.S. Air Force base. He notes that the supposed incident continues to grow, gaining new adherents of its historical validity and adding identities of eyewitnesses who claim to have been present "at the shattering review of superior extraterrestrial technology."
He then reproduces parts of the "letter by Gerald Light, Los Angeles, California, to Meade Layne, San Diego, the late director of Borderline Sciences Research Associates."

The author indicates that Meade Layne, who directed a society which was interested in the paranormal since the middle of the Forties, "Borderland Science Research Associates", received a letter of one of his associates who wrote "I come from Muroc. The report is true, terribly true." This group was interested in the flying saucers since 1947, concluding that they came from the "space ether" and the report in question was that of contact between the pilots of the flying saucers and president Eisenhower on the grounds of the base of Muroc in California.
Pierre Lagrange notes that there isn't much more to say, the case being one of the multiple rumors circulating at the time within the lunatic fringe of ufology.
The Muroc Air Force Base alien contacts mythology starts with a claim by radio host Frank Edwards, who mentioned without much details on his radio show in September 1952 that there has been a flood of UFO sightings at that Air Force Base. in March 1954, he mentioned on the radio that flying saucers had landed there. This of course prompted nutcase claims of the "I was there" kind.
It is correct that UFO sightings were actually reported in that area, for example, one Dick Beemer, aviation photographer for North American Aviation Company, made a rather interesting sighting of an unidentified flying object there is September 30, 1952.
But over the years, the topic of UFOs at Muroc AFB prompted many outlandish claims by less-than-believable characters. This file is about just one of several claims that "beings" came to the Air Force Base in their "flying saucers" and met with officials, including no less that the President of the United States. In fact, the claim took a life of its own in the writings of lunatic fringe people, to such an extent that it would take me volumes to document all the later claims. I feel it is actually more relevant to document how the claims started, to show what sort of foundations it has, rather than to spent months looking for every single mythological variations that was put forth by conspiracy buffs with no sense of reality in the next decades.
I cannot list all the later claims made about the "testimony" by Gerald Light. Some added that Light had said that the UFO occupants were "Nordics" - the lunatic fringe's designation for tall blonde aliens looking like humans. Other said the spaceship were from "the Ashtar command". Others said the aliens were "short grays" who wanted to trade DNA". Of course this is all nonsense. All there was is what Light wrote, and all the further "information" was purely and simply invented.
Gerald Light claimed to have been at Muroc, cleared to witness the event. Why a borderline occultist/paranormal believer would get security clearance to such an event is left unanswered. Light claimed to have been there with other people:
Desmond Leslie, said by Jimmy Guieu to have performed an on-site investigation without learning anything, was the man who wrote the books of the self-claimed "contactee" George Adamski.
N. Meade Layne (1883-1961) was an occultist who put emphasis on "borderland research", i.e. anything from ghosts to "paranormal phenomena. He founded the Borderland Sciences Research Foundation in 1945, and wrote such books or booklets as "The Ether Ship Mystery", "The Coming of the Guardians", "The Art of Geomancy" and "The Ether of Space". Though Layne is long deceased, a website at www.borderlands.com indicates that the association he founded has not disappeared.
As of Gerald Light, oddly or significantly, I found strictly null independent confirmation that he even existed, and it is quite possible that he did not exist at all and that his alleged letter was simply invented.
