An information letter of the US Air Force Intelligence indicates that on September 2, 1950 at approximately 05:30 p.m. at the Ernest Harmon air base, Newfoundland, Canada, soldier Edward E. Wysong, 17 years old, had seen a silhouette of a person between the beach and him at the East end of the landing strip. He went to investigate, and then saw a flash and felt a burn at his left hand. He fired back several times, with unknown results, and an search of the sector gave no result. Wysong had been in fact wounded with the left hand, apparently by a .22 or .25 bullet. Because there had unidentified radar echoes of unknown flying objects in the sector, the Intelligence reported the shooting incident as possibly related, and noted that it was sketchy information so far.
Much later, the story was published as a case of close encounter of the third kind in a skeptic ufology book, and thus made its unjustified entry in ufology catalogues, and as "project Blue Book case" in skeptic catalogue. The fact that the soldier had been apparently wounded by an ordinary gunshot was not told anymore.

[Ref. bb1:] U.S. AIR FORCE:
Air Intelligence Report IR-260-50, US Air Force, of September 7, 1950, is mainly about unidentified radar contacts in Newfoundland. It also reports the following events:
"At approx 0130Z 2 September 1950 at Ernest Harmon AF Base, Pfc Edward E. Wysong AF 15299584, 43rd Bomb Wing, AP, Age 17, was shot in ring finger left hand. Wysong, on east end of runway, sighted silhouette of person between beach and self. When investigated saw flash and left hand burn. Wysong then fired 4 rounds from 45 caliber pistol and 3 rounds from carabine with unknown results. Wysong's wound believed inflicted by .22 or .25 caliber jacketed slug. No powder burns. Search of area made with negative results. Although information on above sketchy possibility exists of tie-in between shooting of airman and GCA sightings. Additional information will be forwarded on sightings if and when received." |
[Ref. ar1:] ALBERT ROSALES:
Albert Rosales indicates in his catalogue that in Harmon Air Force Base, Newfoundland, Canada, on September 2, 1950, in the evening, military personnel observed the figure of a man between the beach area and the end of the runway, when the witness approached to investigate there was a flash of light and he felt a sharp burning pain on his left hand, he looked and the figure had vanished.
Albert Rosales indicates that the source is John Brent Musgrave, UFO Occupants and Critters.
[Ref. lg1:] LUIS R. GONZALES MANSO:
Luis R. Gonzalez Manso notes in his FirstHumCat catalogue that on September 2, 1950, at the Harmon Air Force Base, no UFO was seen, only a silhouette:
"Late evening. A man observed the silhouette of a person between beach and himself at the end of the base runway. When he investigated, he saw a flash and felt his hand burn."
Luis Gonzales indicates that his sources are John Bent Musgrave, UFO Occupants and Critters (1979), case #12, and the Project Blue Book Case #795.
[Ref. go1:] GODELIEVE VAN OVERMEIRE:
The Belgian ufologist indicate that in 1950, on September 2 in the USA, at the air base of Harmon, "(antedated?) Black night. A man saw the silhouette of a person passing between the beach and himself; at the end of the post office of the airfield. While going to investigate, a gleam caused a burn on his hand."
Godelieve van Overmeire indicates that the sources are: "Sources: John Bent Musgrave, UFO Occupants & Critters (1979), caso nº12 ; ?Projet Blue Book cas nº795 - Fundación Anomalía - Catálogo de los primeros casos de humanoides clasificados por países (FIRSTHUMCAT) Luis R. González Manso - España".
Blue Book case 795 is not this incident per se, but unidentified radar targets in Newfoundland previously.
All the later sources, starting with a skeptic book, have apparently ignored or chosen to suppress the essential information in the US Air Force memo: the young military man was shot in the finger by ordinary bullets. This information should not have been removed. The removal changed the non-UFO non-alien story into some sort of close encounter of the third kind but there is no sense at all in this.
