February 1947, Manaus, Amazon, Brazil, a traveler:

Brief summary of the event and follow-up:

Apparently, "mysteries books" authors Janet and Colin Bord told in 1989 that in February 1947, in Manaus, Brazil, or on the Amazon river, a traveler saw five "birds" with leather bodies and wings.

This, is according to Belgian ufologist Godelieve van Overmeire who included it in her UFO timeline a few years later.

Narratives:

[Ref. go1:] GODELIEVE VAN OVERMEIRE:

1947, February

BRAZIL, Manuos, (Amazon river)

A traveler saw five "birds" with leather bodies and wings. (Janet and Colin BORD: "Modern Mysteries of the World" - Guild Publishing London 1989, 314)

[Ref. ar1:] ALBERT ROSALES:

Albert Rosales indicates that in Manaus, Matto Grosso, Brazil, in February 1947 at an unknown time, near the Amazon River, a traveler saw five bird-like creatures with leathery bodies and wings flying overhead, and that there is no other information.

He indicates the source as "Janet & Colin Bord, "Modern Mysteries of The World".

Points to consider:

It is obviously not "Manuos" as per Belgian "skeptical" ufologist Godelieve van Overmeire [go1], a non-existent locality in the Amazon, but Manaus.

British authors Janet and Colin Bord have published an impressive number of books on "fairies", ghosts, encounters of strange creatures and all sorts of mysteries. But they present those the way of a "cabinet of curiosity", questions of reliability, explanation, are hardly the concern.

It is fairly certain that they are not the primary source of the alleged incident. But I found no other, previous, or more detailed source of what is thus at the moment just a very poorly documented case, without details, and of unknown credibility, of which I do not even know the date of the first report.

Of course, to me, "birds with leather bodies and wings" is an almost accurate description of bats.

Amazon bat.

Of course, there is little chance that the locals would not have recognized bats; but see: one of the rare details given in this story is that the witness was "a traveler", thus maybe a foreigner, someone who has never been confronted to these animals.
