Summer 1930, Haverigg, Cumbria, U-K., Philip Irwing:

Brief summary of the event and follow-up:

The ufology magazine NUFON, in England, reported in its #176 issue of June 1997, the story heard by the ufology group NLUFOIG, of Philip, 80, who was 13 in 1930 when he made a strange encounter:

In Haverigg on the Cumbrian coast, he was enjoying a summer stroll on the beach checking fishing lines with a friend.

As he walked back across the dunes towards the little house that was then his home he spotted "the devil" - but noticed that it did not have a tail.

The entity was of average height and covered by reddish brown hair. Silver foil was covering the body around the waist and feet. The facial features were human but angular. At the sight of this weird being Philip fled.

The magazine also reported that two days earlier, as he was walking home from the cinema, he and a group of about 20 others saw a "comet" in the sky. It was in fact round with flames shooting from the back, and slowly sank towards the ground and then "disappeared". As Philip noted; "In those days we had not heard of flying saucers." He adds that he would probably have forgotten about the "comet", but for the encounter with the hairy man soon afterwards. He insisted that "the being was not of this earth". NUFON notes that very probably the UFO was a meteor - equally unknown to most ordinary folk in the days before TV and UFO debates. But as for the strange entity, they ask, "Who knows?"

A very brief summary without mention of the the probable meteor was produced in ufological catalogs thereafter. One of these sources give the wrong year, another gives the name of the witness as "Philip Irving." Some give a time, as 9 p.m., or "night"; which seems invented.

Alien contact in 1930

Investigation by the LUFOIG

An 80 year old man (Philip) has described his encounter in 1930 in Haverigg on the Cumbrian coast. At the time he was just 13 and enjoying a summer stroll on the beach checking fishing lines with a friend.

As he walked back across the dunes towards the little house that was then his home he spotted 'the devil' - but noticed that it did not have a tail.

The entity was of average height and covered by reddish brown hair. Silver foil was covering the body around the waist and feet. The facial features were human but angular. At the sight of this weird being Philip fled.

He also reports that two days earlier when he was walking home from the cinema he and a group of about 20 others saw a 'comet' in the sky. In fact, it was quite different - being round with flames shooting from the back. It slowly sank towards the ground and then disappeared As Philip notes; 'In those days we had not heard of flying saucers.' He adds that he would probably have forgotten about it but for the encounter with the hairy man soon afterwards. He insists that 'the being was not of this earth'. Very probably the UFO was a fireball meteor - equally unknown to most ordinary folk in the days before TV and UFO debates. But as for the strange entity. Who knows?

Albert Rosales indicates in his catalogue that in Haverigg Dunes, Cumbria, England, in the Summer of 1930, at night, "13-year old Philip had gone to visit the dunes in order to meet with a friend. There he encountered a bizarre creature of average height covered in thick fur, reddish brown in color with a human-like angular face. It appeared to have a silver plate on its chest and silvery talons on its feet. The witness fled the area."

Albert Rosales indicates that the source is "NUFON # 176".

A hairy creature with a human and "very angular" face was seen in 1913, as it emerged from the brush in Haverigg, Cumbria, Britain. The witness, a thirteen-year-old boy visiting the dunes to meet one of his friends, described the monster as a thick-furred entity with long, silvery talons and some sort of silver plate on its chest.

Points to consider:

I have nothing to add to the comments of the primary source [nu1]; except that we should have been informed whether the witness was still sharp. On the other hand, it would only be a speculation if someone suggests that he wasn't. An event like this, if real, can only be kept vivid in one's memory.
