1930, Mandurah, Australia, Western Australia, Beryl Hickey and her father:

Brief summary of the event and follow-up:

In 1982, a 67-year-old woman, Beryl Hickey, saw a picture of "ET", the alien in Steven Spielberg's fiction movie of the same name. It made her think of an experience she had as a 15-year-old girl, near the estuary at Mandurah, Western Australia. So in 1982, she wrote a report to the Perth UFO Research Group (PUFORG), stating:

"(I was) sitting reading with my parents in a humpy, on a block in Mandurah, in Greary Rd, by the light of a hurricane lamp, with the door partly open. The time (was) about 8 p.m. as we went to bed early."

"A little pink creature walked in. (It was) about 24 inches in height (with) large ears, big bulbous eyes, covered with a film, small hands, large feet, slit of a mouth, no hair, and shiny as if wet or oily."

"We were terrified and my father went white and being a religious man said it was the work of the devil. Picking up a prawning net, he picked it up in it and it made a noise like 'EE...EE' and my father put it outside. We never saw it again and went to bed feeling very scared. This was in 1930 and I never thought any more about it until I saw a picture of 'ET,' although only its eyes were the same... It did not have a round body, more straight down like a child's body. I cannot remember seeing any sex organs... (Its shape was) like an elf."

1930

AUSTRALIA, Mandurah

All of a sudden, in the evening, in Beryl Hickey's father's house appeared a small, bald man with big ears, a wide, lipless mouth, bulging eyes, shining all over his body as if smeared with fat, with small hands and pink feet well-formed like those of a baby, about 50 cm high. Her father, who was a very Christian man, thought it was the devil. He cast a net on this creature to evacuate it out. It screamed like a mouse. It was forbidden for Beryl to speak of this event to anyone, but she secretly confided to a friend. The latter reminded her of that at the exit of the "ET" movie. AN "ET" ELF IN A MANDURAH HUMPY?

In 1982 a 67 year old woman saw a picture of "ET", Steven Spielberg's cute alien creation. It made her think of an experience she had as a 15 year old girl, near the estuary at Mandurah, Western Australia. She supplied a report to the Perth UFO Research Group which stated:

"(In 1930 I was) sitting reading with my parents in a humpy, on a block in Mandurah, in Greary Rd, by the light of a hurricane lamp, with the door partly open. The time (was) about 8 pm as we went to bed early. "A little pink creature walked in. (It was) about 24 inches in height (with) large ears, big bulbous eyes, covered with a film, small hands, large feet, slit of a mouth, no hair, and shiny as if wet or oily. "We were terrified and my father went white and being a religious man said it was the work of the devil. "Picking up a prawning net, he picked it up in it and it made a noise like 'EE...EE' and my father put it outside. We never saw it again and went to bed feeling very scared. This was in 1930 and I never thought any more about it until I saw a picture of 'ET,' although only its eyes were the same. ... It did not have a round body, more straight down like a child's body. I cannot remember seeing any sex organs... (It's shape was) like an elf." (7)

Before we leave this quaint tale behind, I will mention anthropologist's Dr. Charles Mountford's description of a "spirit child" in his fascinating study, Nomads of the Australian Desert:

"This child, called mulu-kuranti (nose-spirit), was a mamu (malignant being). Its fingers were twisted, it had ears like a kangaroo, large eyes resembling those of an owl, a grotesque face, and projecting teeth. When Kuntunga (mother of all spirit-children, the "julanja") was suckling this infant, it bit her so often that she finally killed it and left the body in the creek, where it was transformed into (an) irregularly-shaped boulder." The Juminda "frog-man" resembles grotesque small humanoids seen by Beryl Hickey and her father at Mandurah, Western Australia, in their house one night in 1930, and by a man gathering Christmas trees on December 15, 1956 in woods near Derry, New Hampshire -- in both cases, again with no mention of a UFO. The Mandurah creature was about 20 inches tall, glistened as though wet or covered with oil, and had pink skin, big ears, a wide slit mouth, bulging eyes covered with a film and "perfectly formed little hands and feet." It squeaked in fright when the Hickey father captured and dragged it outside with a prawning net. [... Other case ...]

Albert Rosales indicates in his catalogue that in Mandurah, Western Australia, in 1930, at night, "A strange little entity appeared inside the witness's house late one night, it was described as one-meter tall, pinkish in color with large ears, a wide slit mouth, with glistening skin as if wet. It also had bulging eyes covered with some sort of film. The father of the main witness grabbed a net and threw it over the creature, then dragged it outside. No other information."

Albert Rosales indicates that the source is "Janet and Colin Bord, Unexplained Mysteries Of the 20th Century".

Basterfield 1997 p136 citing Perth UFO Research Group

Bord 1989 p147 citing West Mail (Perth) 25 December 1982

Evaluation: Reported when the woman was 67, distorted memory of some animal. Or perhaps just a newspaper ghost story.

Points to consider:

The Spielberg movie ET was issued in 1982, and the first report is on the same year, consistently with the story.

The version by Joseph Trainor, that the creature was "asking for water" and "Shot to death by terrified farmer" is obvioulsy wrong.

The source given in [pr1] as "West Mail", is actually "Western Mail". There was no "West Mail" nespaper in Perth, but there was a "Western Mail" newspaper. A Perth newspaper of that name first existed from 1885 to 1955, then again from 1980 to 1988.

The source given in [pr1] as "Basterfield 1997 p136" is likely the book "UFO's: a report on Australian encounters" by Keith Basterfield, Reed Books, Australia, 1997. The book was first published in 1981 as: "Close encounters of an Australian kind" but this earlier issue was printed before the wonman's report.

It may have been some just-born lost animal that the father and the daughter were unable to indentify. The suggestion it may be "a newspaper ghost story". it did not appear in a newspaper before, but after, the letter by a witness to a ufology group, and the reported entity has nothing to do with so-called "ghosts", who are human-looking.
