1919, BRANKSOME PARK, DORSET, R-U., MR. LONSDALE:

Brief summary of the event and follow-up:

A 1998 book about fairies and gnomes says that in Branksome Park, Dorset, England, in 1919, at night, one Mr. Lonsdale was in the park when he suddenly became conscious of movement on the edge of the lawn, and then saw several little figures dressed in brown peering through the bushes.

In a few seconds a dozen or more small people, about two feet in height, in bright clothes and with radiant faces, ran on to the lawn, dancing hither and thither for about five minutes. They were frightened away by a servant bringing tea.

[Ref. ar1:] ALBERT ROSALES:

Albert Rosales indicates in his catalogue that in Branksome Park, Dorset, England, in 1919, at night, a Mr. Lonsdale was in the park when he suddenly became conscious of movement on the edge of the lawn. He then saw several little figures dressed in brown peering through the bushes. In a few seconds a dozen or more small people about two ft in height, in bright clothes and with radiant faces, ran on to the lawn, dancing hither and thither. This went on for about five minutes. They were frightened away by a servant bringing tea.

Albert Rosales indicates that the source is Janet Bord, Faeries, Real Encounters with The Little People.

The website publishes the [ar1] source.

Points to consider:

Although Janet Bord's editorial review claims that the book offers "tangible evidence about the existence of fairies, dwarves, gnomes, pixies, brownies, and elves", such is not the case. This particular case for example shows more issue than any evidence.

Who was "Mr Lonsdale"? A wealthy eccentric using hallucinogenic drugs? A poet? The patient of a mental institution? How, where and when did the story surface? Was it ever checked into?
