A few modern ufologists mention that in Koln, Germany, in 1912, in the afternoon, the young Ernest Dickhoff was alone in his bedroom when he felt a strong urge to look behind him.
Allegedly, he then saw two strange beings, sitting on his bed. This appeared to be man-like, but seemed to be naked. After a short duration the beings suddenly vanished in plain sight.
This all sounds very much like a typical case of hypnagogic hallucination. But what the sources do not tell is that "Ernest Dickhoff" is actually Robert Ernst Dickhoff, a crackpot occultist and writer whose numerous claims largely tops those of most of the so-called "contactees".

[Ref. ia1:] JAN ALDRICH:
The ufologist listed a CE3 case dated 1912, located in "Cologne", Germany, with the name "Dickoff" as witness name, and UFOCAT indicated as the source.
[Ref. ar1:] ALBERT ROSALES:
Albert Rosales indicates that in Cologne, Germany, in 1912, in the afternoon, the young witness, Ernest Dickhoff was alone in his bedroom when he felt a strong urge to look behind him. He then saw two strange beings, sitting on his bed. This appeared to be man-like, but seemed to be naked. After a short duration the beings suddenly vanished in plain sight.
Albert Rosales indicates that the source is Denys Breysse, Project Becassine.
He comments that if "Must be one of the earliest 'bedroom visitation' cases on record. Is unfortunate that a more detailed description of the entities is not available."
[Ref. ud1:] "UFODNA" WEBSITE:
The website indicates that in 1912 in the afternoon in Cologne (Koln), Germany, there was a "Close encounter with an unidentified craft and its occupants. An unidentifiable object and its occupants were observed at close range (Dickoff)."
The sources are indicated as Rogerson, Peter, World-Wide Catalog of Type 1 Reports.

1912 - Afternoon COLOGNE (NORTH RHINE-WESTPHALIA : GERMANY) Robert Dickhoff (8) was in his room when he suddenly noticed two beings 1.05m tall, with human features, sitting on his bed. They faded out as he looked. Dickhoff in UFO Analysis and Research Bulletin 1, 5 p17) |
Robert Ernst Dickhoff, (February 6, 1904 – July 27, 1991), aka "Sungma Red Lama, the messenger of Buddha" is actually an occult and Buddhism enthusiast writer, founder of the "American Buddhist Society and Fellowship, Inc.", and also a "contactee", someone who claimed to have been contacted by space people.
He was, in 1947, the author of "The Eternal Fountain: A Kaleidoscope of Divine Inspired Thought Sparks", a book on so-called eastern spirituality. But then he wrote several UFO books, "Homecoming of the Martians", "Agharta: The Subterranean World", and "An Encyclopedia of Flying Saucers".
In "Agharta: The Subterranean World", published by Bruce Humphries, Boston, USA, in 1951; he claimed that 2.5 million years ago Martians landed in Antarctica, then a tropical region, and created the first humans. Then "reptoids" and evil "Venusians Garudas" attacked, forcing the Martians and humans to create two huge underground cities, connected by long tunnels in order to protect themselves. He claimed one of these cities was Shambhala, under Tibet, and the other Agharta, under China’s Tzangpo Valley. Eventually, the Venusians conquered Agharta, then on 1948 the Martian and human alliance reclaimed the city and slew its ruler, the King of the World, and many of his troops. Of course "Lemuria" and "Atlantis" are also part of the picture.
He also claimed that in the modern era, there is a "Brain-God", served an army of robots, whom with the assistance of evil scientists abduct people to space where they feed the "Brain-God" with their blood.
In short, Robert Ernst Dickhoff is an obscure yet striking crackpot precursor of both George Adamski and Richard Shaver, not an ordinary, solid witness of a CE3.
Any yet, even crackpots can experience real phenomena, such as an hypnagogic hallucination episode, another possible explanation of the story.
How and why hypnagogic hallucinations occur can be discovered by reading these references:
