Apparently, the South Wales Daily News newspaper for May 21, 1909, reported that on May 19, 1909, in Maindee, Newport, U-K., at about 8 a.m., W. Beighton's little girl pointed out a "big fowl" which would "flap" at times. It came from the Bristol channel, standing still on occasion, and moved away at about 8.30 a.m.
Two other people reportedly saw the object. One person using a telescope said the craft was 12 to 15 yards long and was carrying three men.

[Ref. js1:] JEAN SIDER:
Jean Sider indicates that on 19 May 1909 at 08:00 Maindee, Newport, Wales, a little girl, W. Beighton, said he saw "a huge poultry" sometimes flapping wings. The thing that seemed to come from Bristol Channel sometimes remained motionless in the air, then spun in the distance at about half past eight. Two other witnesses also saw the object. One of them had even used a telescope that allowed him to estimate its dimensions: between twelve and fifteen yards long and he distinguished three men on board.
Jean Sider indicates that the source is "FSR, vol. 17, #1, 1971, p. 18, based on the South Wales Daily News, May 21, 1909".

May 19 1909 - 0800 hrs MAINDEE near NEWPORT (MONMOUTHSHIRE : WALES) Mr Beighton’s little girl pointed out an object resembling a "big fowl" in the sky. It flapped at times, came from the Bristol Channel and hovered from time to time. Two other people saw the contraption, one -through a telescope- saw it was a craft 12m long carrying three men. Carl Grove in FSR op cit citing South Wales Daily News 21 May 1909) |
Ernest T. Willows had built his first airship "Willows 1" in 1905 as he was only 19 years old. Willows 1 had its first proper flight on September 5, 1905. His "Willows II" was built in 1909 at East Moors, Cardiff, Wales, and officially it was first flown on November 26, 1909. So there was an airship builder at work in Wales in 1909, but no record exist that he flew on May 19, 1909, above Maindee.
What the little girl - how young was she, how believable is a little girl talking about some big poultry in the sky? - saw remains uncertain, if she did see something. What the man with the telescope saw is also uncertain, but there is no reason to claim he saw an alien spaceship nor anything paranormal. Maybe it was a test flight of some locally built airship, maybe it was just a hoax.
To make things even worse, the man with the telescope is probably the person said to be a witness in the Maesteg sighting report 3 days later. If so this file should not even be seaparated from that other one...
