ALSACAT:

ALSACAT is my comprehensive catalog of UFO sighting reports in Alsace, the region is the North-East of France, whether they are "explained" or "unexplained".

The ALSACAT catalog is made of case files with a case number, summary, quantitative information (date, location, number of witnesses...), classifications, all sources mentioning the case with their references, a discussion of the case in order to evaluate its causes, and a history of the changes made to the file. A general index and thematic sub-catalogs give access to these Alsatian case files.

Case of the Hohneck, on June 19, 2017:

Case number:

ALSACAT-2017-06-19-HOHNECK-1

Summary:

On the ufology forum Les Mystères des OVNIS, on June 20, 2017, "Flirden", a 70-year-old retiree from Essey-les-Nancy, reports having found a "black blurry cylinder", which would be "an unusual UFO phenomenon", on a photo he had taken on June 19, 2017, around 5 p.m., at the Hohneck, in the Vosges or the Haut-Rhin. He said:

"Around 5 p.m. on a walk towards "Le Hohneck-La Bresse-Vosges", going up to the top I have a photo of the restaurant at the top, given the beautiful blue sky with some white clouds. I saw on a computer the "black cylinder-shaped" object but blurry."

"Flirden" had seen nothing at the time he took that photo, but nevertheless filled in the fields of the observation questionnaire with data that do not make sense, such as an observation time of "about 1 minute" and a size of "15 m" for the UFO!

On the forum, participants discussed the solution: the "fuzzy UFO" was probably an insect or a bird. "Flirden", having perhaps realized his misinterpretation, removed the photo and did not respond to the questions.

Hello,

May we see the original photo?

The image host https://www.hostingpics.net allows to keep the metadata of the photo (exposure, aperture, etc...).

If the object was not observed live, it is very likely that it is a "conventional" object. If it is blurry, it is either because it is out of focus, or because it moves too fast compared to the exposure time of the photo, or both.

CU.

Hello,

not easy to extrapolate from a blurry photo...

any object or bird could give you the appearance of a cylinder... either because it is due to insufficiently stable camera shake when shooting, or because it is is the exposure time which is too long and the object or the animal has time to move...

but it would be good if you let us see your photo and we can access the exifs...

Hello,

Indeed Flirden, Alain and Stéphane summarized well, without original photo, no valid data for an analysis! ;-)

Oh ! It seems that the photo is gone? Flirden, if you could re-post it to us so that we can try to go further in this investigation which is a bit slow....

Discussion:

The Hohneck, at its top, is exactly at the limit between the departments of the Vosges and the departments of the Haut-Rhin.

Map.

The remarks and proposals of the members of the forum [myo1] are all sensible. The discussion ends with the disappearance of the photo; I think "Flirden" realized that his photo didn't show a "blurry black cylindrical UFO" but a bird or an insect.

I know the Hohneck well. There are many flying insects there, including black flies with rather elongated bodies. The blur makes me think that it was probably rather of a close insect than a distant bird whose blur would probably have been less striking on a photo taken during the day under a clear sky, therefore sunny, therefore resulting in an rather short exposure.

This case is among the (too) many cases of what we call "BLURFO", the "blurry UFOs" found on digital photos as nobody had seen anything odd when the photo was taken.

Evaluation:

Insect or bird.
