ALSACAT:

ALSACAT is my comprehensive catalog of UFO sighting reports in Alsace, the region is the North-East of France, whether they are "explained" or "unexplained".

The ALSACAT catalog is made of case files with a case number, summary, quantitative information (date, location, number of witnesses...), classifications, all sources mentioning the case with their references, a discussion of the case in order to evaluate its causes, and a history of the changes made to the file. A general index and thematic sub-catalogs give access to these Alsatian case files.

Case of Krautergersheim, on February 20, 2015:

Case number:

ALSACAT-2015-02-20-KRAUTERGERSHEIM-1

Summary:

An anonymous person reported a sighting of a "flying wing" and spots of light in the sky that occurred on February 20, 2015.

This person, with two passengers friends, was traveling on the motorway from Sélestat to Strasbourg for a jazz concert at the Pôle Sud, when at the height of Krautergersheim, they were surprised to see bright lights, white, north of them.

They first thought it was a plane, but found surprising that the intensity of the thing grew as they advanced.

Then, at about 50 meters away, they observed three balls of light approaching the ground and disappearing.

Then, on reaching Strasbourg, they saw a "second luminous phenomenon." They tried to persuade themselves that it was a plane despite the intensity and stationary stop of the object above Strasbourg.

They stopped in the street and got out of the car to see the motionless phenomenon. The "craft" was hovering above Strasbourg, and had a size of a basketball court. The lights delineated a delta-shaped hang glider. After a few seconds, the "weightless" craft departed toward the southwest.

Then, returning from the the concert 2 hours later, they saw red light spots moving "also at high speed" on the slopes of Vosges mountains.

02-20-2015 - (Dep.67) - Flying wing and luminous dots

Date: 02-20-2015

Department: 67 (Bas-Rhin)

Localization: Strasbourg

Hour: 08:00 p.m.

Numbers [sic] of witnesses: 3 people

Type of observation: NL: Nocturnal Lights

Approximate duration of the observation: 30 minutes

What was seen: Flying wing and luminous dots

Description of the facts:

The incident took place starting from Sélestat to go to a jazz concert at the Pôle Sud of Strasbourg that Friday, February 20, 2015. We were 3, two friends and myself. Aboard my car on the highway, up to krautergersheim we were struck by bright lights, white towards the north. First thinking first of a plane, we were surprised by the intensity that increased as we advanced. Then at about 50 meters we saw 3 balls of light approaching the ground and disappearing. Arriving at Strasbourg a second luminous phenomenon appeared. Trying somehow to persuade us that it was a plane despite the intensity and stationary stops of the object above Strasbourg, we decided to suddenly stop the car in the street to get out to see the phenomenon in stop. The craft was hevering above Strasbourg, the size of a basketball court. The lights delineated a form of hang glider. After a few seconds the "weightless" craft left in a south westerly direction. On the return of the show 2 hours later, the red light spots are still traveling at high speed on the flanks of the Vosges mountains. Other testimonies?

Best regards.

Pierrot

Discussion:

Map.

To drive from Sélestat to Strasbourg passing near Krautergersheim, means to drive on the A35 highway.

Map.

The witnesses are therefore likely about the green dot, going straight to the direction of the Strasbourg - Entzheim airport; whose runway is at the blue line, 8 kilometers ahead of them.

Strasbourg, over which witnesses say there was a stationary craft, is farther but in the same direction, 17 kilometers ahead of them.

So there is a good chance that the three friends had seen three times airliners taking off from Entzheim, the illusion of stillness is classical when the directions fit. The witness actually indicates they were trying to persuade themselves these were planes, and there is no real strangeness in their observation to refute this.

The time given as 08:00 p.m. for the first observation could match the "Hop" airliner of 08:05 p.m. taking off for Nantes, which would have flown straight toward their position. At 8:30 p.m., there is a flight for Lille. The "three white balls" that approached the ground then disappeared could have beeen a landing plane. The sighting "two hours later" is of red light spots on their right as they are on the way back, we can think of a plane but no longer facing them and therefore shows red navigation lights rather that white headlights - unless this was some Chinese lanterns or fighter planes or something else.

Note the absence of other witness reports; which is logical if all these UFOs were planes that most people had interpreted correctly. Phenomena really out of the ordinary on this busy highway should have been widely seen.

Evaluation:

Probable airliners taking off.
