ALSACAT:

ALSACAT is my comprehensive catalog of UFO sighting reports in Alsace, the region is the North-East of France, whether they are "explained" or "unexplained".

The ALSACAT catalog is made of case files with a case number, summary, quantitative information (date, location, number of witnesses...), classifications, all sources mentioning the case with their references, a discussion of the case in order to evaluate its causes, and a history of the changes made to the file. A general index and thematic sub-catalogs give access to these Alsatian case files.

Case of Illkirch-Graffenstaden, on May 27, 2012:

Case number:

ALSACAT-2012-05-27-ILLKIRCHGRAFFENSTADEN-1

Summary:

After reading on a general information website of the city of Besançon about "mysterious" orange lights that were seen there, one Bruno added his comments on May 28, 2012, saying that he too had seen "these strange orange lights" in the sky, on May 28, 2012 at 01:15 a.m. in the sky of d’Illkirch-Graffenstaden near Strasbourg in the Bas-Rhin.

He said there were first two; then a dozen followed. He returned home to get his mobile phone to film it, but the time he came out of his home, they were all gone but one that he managed to film. He concluded that it was "weird".

[Ref. btt1:] WITNESS REPORT ON THE WEBSITE "LE BISON TEINT":

Following an article about "mysterious balls" - obviously Chinese lanterns seen in Besançon, readers commented with their own sighting report, including from Alsace, such as this one:

Bruno wrote on 28/05/2012 at 0:14 a.m.

Good evening,i also saw these strange orange lights in the sky, it was on sunday morning at 01:15,in the sky of illkirch, there were first two, then a dozen followed behind, i went inside my home to get my cellphone to film them but by the time i came out, they had disappeared,a last one remained that i nevertheless could film, weird...

PS: I specify that Illkirch is near strasbourg in the bas rhin

Discussion:

Map.

Since "Bruno" published on Monday, May 28, 2012, saying that "it was Sunday morning," I dated the case as on Sunday, May 27, 2012.

The description totally evokes a launch of Chinese lanterns, nothing precluding this explanation.

On the web page where Bruno published his story, there are several dozens other similar stories from all over France at various dates, supposed to be "mysterious orange lights", and some wise readers commented these were Chinese lanterns - there is also a reader that seems a bit less informed explaining that these were "Annunaki" aliens from the "Nibiru" planet. There are no reactions by Bruno to these explanations.

Of course, diehards might protest that I did not "scientifically prove" Bruno saw lanterns, and it must then be considered that it might have be an alien spaceship or some "paranormal phenomenon" that appeared to be coincidentally similar to a launch of Chinese lanterns...

Evaluation:

Probable Chinese lanterns.
