ALSACAT:

ALSACAT is my comprehensive catalog of UFO sighting reports in Alsace, the region is the North-East of France, whether they are "explained" or "unexplained".

The ALSACAT catalog is made of case files with a case number, summary, quantitative information (date, location, number of witnesses...), classifications, all sources mentioning the case with their references, a discussion of the case in order to evaluate its causes, and a history of the changes made to the file. A general index and thematic sub-catalogs give access to these Alsatian case files.

Case of Haguenau, on April 28, 2011:

Case number:

ALSACAT-2011-04-28-HAGUENAU-1

Summary:

An unnamed woman sent an email to a "UFOs and paranormal" blog on May 1, 2011, about her sighting in Haguenau in the Bas-Rhin on April 28, 2011:

"Good evening,"

"Did you receive testimonies from people who had seen a strange phenomenon in the sky between 4 and 5 o'clock the night before yesterday? (I did not have the reflex to look at the clock!) While I was on my balcony, my gaze was drawn to the sky because it had just happen there a very short and bright brief flash (the south/southwest) reminiscent of a camera flash. The sky was clear and stars were visible. I had first seen some lights reminiscent of big lit portholes of a big airplane at really low altitude. But it did not move and made absolutely no noise. Suddenly, the craft disappeared in a few seconds jumping vertically and at a phenomenal speed. All this happened in less than 10 seconds."

"I want to say that so far I've never been interested in ufology. But here I highly doubt that what I saw is of human origin. Unless the aerial force has among their best secret craft that are propelled vertically at the speed of light..."

"Yours.".

Mrs X

Good evening,

Did you receive testimonies from people who had seen a strange phenomenon in the sky between 4 and 5 o'clock the night before yesterday? (I did not have the reflex to look at the clock!) While I was on my balcony, my gaze was drawn to the sky because it had just happen there a very short and bright brief flash (the south/southwest) reminiscent of a camera flash. The sky was clear and stars were visible. I had first seen some lights reminiscent of big lit portholes of a big airplane at really low altitude. But it did not move and made absolutely no noise. Suddenly, the craft disappeared in a few seconds jumping vertically and at a phenomenal speed. All this happened in less than 10 seconds.

I want to say that so far I've never been interested in ufology. But here I highly doubt that what I saw is of human origin. Unless the aerial force has among their best secret craft that are propelled vertically at the speed of light...

Yours.".

My answer: at this time I did not receive other testimonies...

Discussion:

Map.

At these hours, it was possible that the sun reflected on a satellite; what ufologists call an "Iridium flash" because for the first known case and explained like this it was reflections on satellites of the Iridium communication network.

Unfortunately there is no precise time, there is therefore no way to really identify with certainty the supposed satellite.

Moreover, this could also be a large shooting star or a small meteor.

On the other hand, the lady told of lights like a plane's portholes. But what is annoying is that the link between the lights and the "flash" is not really clear, there is no duration for these lights, no elevation angle for the "flash". We do not know if it was those lights or the "flash" which was "jumping vertically and at a phenomenal speed." It is possible that there was also a passing airliner.

Evaluation:

Possible meteor, or satellite flash, and possible plane, insufficient data.
