ALSACAT:

ALSACAT is my comprehensive catalog of UFO sighting reports in Alsace, the region is the North-East of France, whether they are "explained" or "unexplained".

The ALSACAT catalog is made of case files with a case number, summary, quantitative information (date, location, number of witnesses...), classifications, all sources mentioning the case with their references, a discussion of the case in order to evaluate its causes, and a history of the changes made to the file. A general index and thematic sub-catalogs give access to these Alsatian case files.

Case of Vendenheim, on October 11, 2008:

Case number:

ALSACAT-2008-10-11-VENDENHEIM-1

Summary:

On the web, someone reported that in Vendenheim, on Saturday, October 11, 2008 at 10:39 p.m., his family and neighbors saw a powerful light spot of red color in the sky that moved north to south, then suddenly a second and a third point of light, also of red color that came to join the first.

The person said they "look like balls of fire", the first point was "much bigger before we filmed it but it shrunk" progressively like the other point[s] that after some time also disappeared. He speaks of a craft, said they made no noise, and that the night was calm and quiet.

He wondered if they were hot air balloons but rejected it "because they really do not travel at night, their light is not red, and above all, a hot air balloon fire is not turned off otherwise there is no more gas and it falls down." The person asks the readers to comment and let him know what it was.

A 5-minute video was shot and also published on the web. It shows what looks and moves totally like Chinese lanterns, and a commentator made a good demonstration that they were, finding that the direction followed by the lights was the direction of the wind, showing the absence of solid mass between three lights while some commentators spoke of "a triangular craft", and showing the small size of the lights.

In those years, Chinese lanterns were not yet known to everyone, it was only natural that people wondered what they had seen. Witnesses, the Press, and some ufologists then called thenm "UFOs" regularly. They are a little better known now, but many other stories like this one were still publicized and there are still some ufologists who say these are UFOs. A Vendenheim same shop sells Chinese lanterns.

2008: on 10/11 UFO: above Vendenheim in Alsace

Subject: 2008: on 10/11 UFO: above Vendenheim in Alsace - Sun Oct 26 2008, 10:58 p.m.

On the night of Saturday, October 11, 2008 at 10:39 p.m., my family and our neighbors initially observed a strong red light point in the sky, it moves from north to south. Then suddenly we saw a second and a third light point alsos red who join the first. We do not see clearly on the video but the color dots are very bright red, they look like balls of fire. The first point was much bigger before we filmed but it shrunk like the other point[s] that after a certain time also disappeared. None of these craft made a noise, the night was calm and quiet, you could see in the sky, only one star, by the way a UFO parked next to it. I do not think it was hot air balloons, because they really do not travel at night, their fire is not red and especially the fire of a balloon is not turned off otherwise, the latter has no more gas and falls down.

If you know what it is or if you've seen the same things, do not hesitate to post comments. If you take us for fools or for paranoid, it's not worth it. And if you do not know what it is, talk about it to possibly know if someone has already seen the same thing or if anyone knows what it is.

Thanks.

Interesting, but in the absence of fast movements or more distinct shapes, one can again suspect Chinese lanterns ..... when do we get a spaceship worthy of "Independence Day" ... ? But this is probably too much to ask ...!

There are 42 comments, of all kinds, from "I saw the same thing in ... " and for example this one, at least mentioning the possibility that it was Chinese lanterns:

KAB KA

that could be chinese lanterns..but it depends of the flight behaviour... you dont see too well in the video...or else an american TR3B ^^, or the famous triangle that appeared in the 5 november 1990 flap in France and the belgium flap...

Note [1]: this was not a "UFO wave" but a case of space junk rentry.

Note [2]: documents on the Belgium flap here.

On http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yWIyYeuvaow under the title "UFO ALSACE 10/11/2008 - An advanced hypothesis," in a video based on the original video with his own comments, the author, who gives himself the pseudonym "AboveTheSecret", demonstrates with several arguments that these UFOs were likely Chinese lanterns.

Through an examination of the visible buildings, he determines the trajectory and checking the weather data, he shows that the so-called UFOs moves in the direction of the wind.

By calculating the angular size, he shows that the size of the lights is about 1.30 meter.

By observing the movement of two lights passing a star that is visible between the two lights at the time of their passage, he shows that they are not lights attached to an opaque object, but rather individual lights.

He rightly concludes that these were likely Chinese lanterns.

He shows the video aspect of Chinese lantern to indicate the resemblance.

UFO IN ALSACE

A convincing observation

Witnesses saw pass over their heads, in Vendenheim in Alsace, strange lights they were able to capture with a handy. Here are the comments accompanying the video posted on the Dailymotion website:

I have little work to do here, it was already been done by [as1].

I often said that Chinese lanterns are since about 2005 a very popular festive item again, inexpensive, easy to order on the Internet. And regularly, the lanterns are mistaken for UFOs, or at least raise questions.

In Vendenheim it is even simpler: one can buy Chinese lanterns at the Stumpf store, 3A on the road of Brumath.

The original video was posted on "Dailymotion" on October 13, 2008, and now (2014) it is gone. Probably, the person who posted it learned or understood that it was only Chinese lanterns and wanted to avoid scoffing.

A number of web pages, however, included the text accompanying the video. Here it is:

Then suddenly we saw a second and a third light point also red who join the first one. We do not see clearly on the video but the color dots are very bright red, they look like balls of fire. A number of web forums and websites continue to copy the video and post various comments. I will not waste too much time to add them all to this page, but here are some examples:
