ALSACAT:

ALSACAT is my comprehensive catalog of UFO sighting reports in Alsace, the region is the North-East of France, whether they are "explained" or "unexplained".

The ALSACAT catalog is made of case files with a case number, summary, quantitative information (date, location, number of witnesses...), classifications, all sources mentioning the case with their references, a discussion of the case in order to evaluate its causes, and a history of the changes made to the file. A general index and thematic sub-catalogs give access to these Alsatian case files.

Case of Niederroedern, on August 3, 2008:

Case number:

ALSACAT-2008-08-03-NIEDERROEDERN-1

Summary:

An anonymous person reported to the UFO website "La Centrale Ufologique" his or her observation in Niederroedern in the Bas-Rhin on August 3, 2008 "between 10:00 p.m. and 09:30 p.m.," a two sentences story with a lot of langage errors and mispells.

The person told he or she saw a light in the sky "like the evening star" coming from the northwest and passing in front of him or her at a "not too fast speed", going towards the southwest. The light dimmed as it became distant until it was not visible anymore.

The person thinks that it could not habe been a plane because there was no engine noise or flicker.

Discussion:

Map.

This could have been many things: a helicopter, a satellite, a chinese lantern... Or even a plane if the distance was enough for the noise no to be heard and the flickering of the navigation lights dimmed by the main lights.

At about 20 km approximately in the Northwest of Niederroedern is the Silberstreifen airfield in Germany, but it is fit only to very small planes. The Strasbourg-Entzheim airliners airport is quite far, at 50 km in the Southwest of Niederroedern.

As there is no precise hour, a match with a satellite cannot be excluded or proven.

Evaluation:

Possible plane or helicopter or satellite.
