ALSACAT:

ALSACAT is my comprehensive catalog of UFO sighting reports in Alsace, the region is the North-East of France, whether they are "explained" or "unexplained".

The ALSACAT catalog is made of case files with a case number, summary, quantitative information (date, location, number of witnesses...), classifications, all sources mentioning the case with their references, a discussion of the case in order to evaluate its causes, and a history of the changes made to the file. A general index and thematic sub-catalogs give access to these Alsatian case files.

Case of Soultzeren, on February 17, 1975:

Case number:

ALSACAT-1975-02-17-SOULTZEREN-1

Summary:

In the 1970s, Mrs. Gueudeulot, archivist of the French ufology magazine Lumières Dans La Nuit, noted observation reports sent by the magazine's correspondents. This archive surfaced in the 2020's through the work of the "Sceau" association which is dedicated to the preservation of French UFO archives.

Among the apparently unpublished cases found in there, there is a sighting on February 17, 1975 in Soultzeren, noted as an investigation by Mr. Cl. Fritz.

The witnesses are noted as Claude Kern, schoolboy, 11 years old, living at 31, avenue de Strasbourg in Metz, and eight of his classmates.

The observation is located in Soultzeren, from the building occupied by the children then in snow class.

It is said that at 9:30 p.m., these children were in the dormitory. Unable to sleep, they decided to go look at the moon through the window. The sky was clear.

They had seen a colorful luminous ball appear in the sky which was moving from West to East following an ascending trajectory.

Its diameter was a quarter of that of the full moon, it was very dazzling, difficult to look at although none of the children had sore eyes afterwards. The thing had two aspects alternating one after the other, which were the subject of this sketch:

Drawing.

Several children were scared, but not Claude Kern who thought he had seen "a UFO", who seemed amused and who had this thought; "It's a shame they didn't come near us, maybe they're not enemies!"

It is said that the next day, an observation of this kind was also made at Remiremont in the Vosges.

FEBRUARY 17, 1975.-

SOULTZEREN. - (68)

Hour: 09:30 p.m.

WITNESSES: Claude KERN, schoolboy, 11 years old, living at 31, avenue de Strasbourg in Metz (57), eight classmates of the main witness.

LOCATION: SOULTZEREN, in the Munster valley, EAST of Colmar, from the building occupied by the children then in snow class.

THE FACTS: the children were in the dormitory. Unable to sleep, they decided to go look at the moon through the window. The sky was clear. They saw a colorful luminous ball appear in the sky which was moving in the WEST direction, following an upward trajectory.

APPARENT DIAMETER: a quarter of that of the full moon. It was very dazzling, difficult to look at although none of the children's eyes hurt afterward. The craft had two aspects alternating one after the other (see sketch)

Several children were scared, but not Claude KERN who seemed amused and who had this reflection; "It's a shame they didn't come near us, maybe they're not enemies!" He thinks he saw a U.F.O.

The next day, an observation of this type was made at REMIREMONT in the Vosges.

INVESTIGATION BY MR CL. FRITZ.

Discussion:

Map.

The report is very brief, the strongest element of strangeness is the angular size of a quarter of that of the full moon, which is considerable. But the witness is a child (the other 8 children were certainly not heard).

Among the missing information: the duration, the noise or lack thereof.

Evaluation:

Unidentified, insufficient information.
