ALSACAT:

ALSACAT is my comprehensive catalog of UFO sighting reports in Alsace, the region is the North-East of France, whether they are "explained" or "unexplained".

The ALSACAT catalog is made of case files with a case number, summary, quantitative information (date, location, number of witnesses...), classifications, all sources mentioning the case with their references, a discussion of the case in order to evaluate its causes, and a history of the changes made to the file. A general index and thematic sub-catalogs give access to these Alsatian case files.

Case of Mulhouse, on October 4, 1972:

Case number:

ALSACAT-1972-10-04-MULHOUSE-1

Summary:

In the ufology magazine Lumières Dans La Nuit #133 for March 1974, Mr. Nueffer, investigator of the LDLN group in Mulhouse, communicated without specifying his source an observation from this city on the 4th of October 1972, around 9:00 p.m.:

"M. Cassaghi, 16-year-old, and his parents observe moving white lights. There were two fairly large moving objects and a third that appeared to be stationary. From a white color at the beginning of the observation they changed to red later. The two objects followed a curve of great radius, probably above Didenheim. The duration of visibility was of the order of one minute. The witness reports that he observed an airplane immediately after, very easily recognizable by its position lights and its flashing lights, which made the witnesses say that the objects sighted were not planes, their light being steady. The objects were heading rather towards the East, direction Germany, while the plane was heading towards the airport."

OCTOBER 4, 1972.-

MULHOUSE. - (68)

Hour: about 9 p.m.

Mr. CASSAGHI, 16 years old, and his parents observe moving white lights. There were two rather large objects moving and a third which appeared to be stationary. From a white color at the beginning of the observation, they later changed to red. The two objects flew in a curve of large radius, probably above DIDENHEIM. The duration of visibility was of the order of a minute. The witness reports that he observed a plane immediately afterwards, recognizable by its position lights and its flashing lights, which led the witnesses to say that the objects seen were not planes, their light being fixed. The objects were heading EAST, towards GERMANY whereas the plane was heading towards the airport.

Discussion:

Map.

The locations are poorly specified; we are told of an observation in Mulhouse but it is not certain that the witnesses were in Mulhouse itself, and Mulhouse is a fairly large city. We are told that the two objects "followed a curve of large radius, probably above Didenheim". If the witnesses were in Mulhouse itself, it would thus be towards their south. We were then told that the objects were going "rather towards the E, direction Germany", but also that the plane "was heading towards the airport"... which is also to the east, towards Germany, if seen from Mulhouse passing in the direction if Didenheim, thus the same apparent direction for the plane and the unknown "objects."

The allusion to the planes is common. To get to the nearby airport (Basel - Mulhouse airport at the time), planes bypass Mulhouse, from the South or the North, going to the South-East or the East.

Map.

I can only stay with the statements of the witness: he says that the objects were not planes. He might have been right, but what was it? Helicopters, anything else? There aren't enough details in the story, and there hasn't been an investigation to my knowledge. So I see there an "unidentified" but with little strangeness and little information.

Evaluation:

Unidentified, insufficient information, low strangeness.
