ALSACAT:

ALSACAT is my comprehensive catalog of UFO sighting reports in Alsace, the region is the North-East of France, whether they are "explained" or "unexplained".

The ALSACAT catalog is made of case files with a case number, summary, quantitative information (date, location, number of witnesses...), classifications, all sources mentioning the case with their references, a discussion of the case in order to evaluate its causes, and a history of the changes made to the file. A general index and thematic sub-catalogs give access to these Alsatian case files.

Case of Kientzheim, in August 1955:

Case number:

ALSACAT-1955-08-00-KIENTZHEIM-1

Summary:

The Alsatian ufology group SPICA published in May 2008 in their bulletin a story by a Mr. J. F.

In August 1955, at 2 a.m., as he was then 13 years old, in Kientzheim in the Haut-Rhin, he had suddenly waken up and gone to the terrace of the house, for no reason.

He looked at the sky and saw at his left, heading towards the right, from south to north, a yellow-orange ball about the two times size of the moon; which gave the impression of being very high in the sky, though he could not estimate the height.

The observation lasted about three minutes, after that the sight was hidden by the mountain. He heard no noise and the sky was clear and without clouds.

He had trouble getting back to sleep, very impressed with this phenomenon that stuck in his memory for his entire life. He had never reported this event before 2008, and never understood why he found himself on the terrace that night.

Investigation conducted by Schildknecht of a.n.e.l.d.l.n. at the time

Witness: Mr. F.J. winemaker (anonymity, deceased since)

Location: Kientzeim (68) Date: August 1955

Hours: at about 2:00 a.m.

13 years old at the time, Mr F.J. suddenly awoke in the night and went to the terrace of the house without any explanation. He looks at the sky and sees to his left, going to his right (south to north), a yellow-orange ball 2 times the size of the Moon with an impression of being very high in the sky. Estimate of the altitude by the witness impossible. The sighting lasted about 3 minutes because the field of view was hidden by the mountain. He heard no sound, and the sky was bright and clear. The witness had trouble getting back to sleep, very impressed by this phenomenon that has stuck in his memory throughout his life. He never mentioned this event to this day. Mr F.J. never understood why he ended up on the terrace that night. This remained a mystery to him.

MFJ, who died in 2006, was a straight and serious man.

[Ref. cvn2:] CHRISTIAN VALENTIN:

Former journalist Christian Valentin published in 2012 a very interesting book telling the story of UFO sightings, flying saucers sightings, in Alsace, from the beginning to 1980.

In this book, he reports that SPICA News #13 for May 2008 reported on a sighting in Kientzheim in the Haut-Rhin in August 1955 at 2:00:

13 years old at the time, Mr. F. J. suddenly awoken in the night and went on the terrace of the house without any explanation. He looks at the sky and sees on his left, heading towards the right (south to north), a yellow-orange ball od a size of 2 times the moon, with a feeling of being high in the sky. An estimate of the altitude is impossible for the witness. The sighting lasted about 3 minutes for the field of vision was obscured by the mountain. He heard no noise and the sky was bright and clear. The witness had trouble going back to sleep, very impressed by the phenomenon that stuck in his memory throughout his life. He had never reported about it so far. Mr. F. J. never understood why he went on the terrace that night. This remained a mystery to him.
