ACUFO-1944-11-22-TRONDHEIM-1
In 1999, Jan Aldrich, initiator of the historical ufology website Project 1947, catalogued a case he learned about from a letter or report form from U-K. ufologist Andy Roberts' collection.
On November 22, 1944, at about 10 p.m., in the West-South-West of Trondheim, Norway, a plane of the IX Squadron of the Royal Air Force was returning from mission, when the flight officer, the engineer and the rear gunner saw a clearly defined “pyrotechnic pink” spherical object following their plane.
The object made violent acceleration and deceleration and swift jerky movements side to side.

At about 2200, returning from a mission against targets in Trondheim (Norway), Dennis Nolan, the flight officer, engineer and rear gunner flying an aircraft of RAF IX Squadron were over Germany at an altitude of approximately 12,000 feet when they saw a clearly defined “pyrotechnic pink” spherical object, flutuacting in brightness, following their plane. It made violent acceleration and deceleration and swift jerky movements from side to side. The rear and mid-gunners thought that it could have been a German jet fighter but did not fire ont the object which did not attack them. Back at their base, the intelligence officers debriefing them showed great interest in their sighting but offered no explanation. The pilot underwent further interrogations by intelligence officers with the N°5 Group Intelligence section back at Morton Hall.
Comments: N°5 Group's ongoing investigation of “rocket” phenomena sightings had begun more than a year earlier.

The Avro 683 Lancaster was a four-engine night bomber built in more than 7,000 units and it became, with the Handley Page Halifax, the main bomber of the Royal Air Force from 1942 on.
Its defense against German fighter planes was 8 7.62 mm machine guns.
The XI Squadron of the Royal Air Force was a night bomber squadron equipped with Lancaster bombers; the performed a significant raid against Peenemünde in August 1943, they bombed and permanently disabled the battleship Tirpitz in Tromso, Norway, on November 12, 1944.
