ACUFO-1943-09-00-FRANCE-1
In 1982-1984, Dr. Louis Winkler, a U.S. astronomer at Pennsylvania State University, compiled a catalog of pre-1947 “UFO-like phenomena” for the Fund for UFO Research (FUFOR), USA.
One case he noted there was that a “flashing, jet black, cigar-shaped object was seen traveling at three times the speed of the airplane when it abruptly stopped 1 mi. away and turned and circled the airplane.”
Dr. Winkler indicated that this occurred in September 1943 in France, and noted the source as “Hobana-Weverbergh”.

Nothing is said about the plane in the sources available to me.
Dr. Winkler ([lwr1]) wrote “Hobana-Weverbergh” as being the source of this report.
This could only mean that the source was the book “UFO's From Behind The Iron Curtain”, by Romanian ufologist Ion Hobana and Dutch ufologist Julien Weverbergh, first published in Holland as “UFO's in Oost en West” by Kluwer in 1971, published in 1975 in the English edition, titled “Les O.V.N.I. en U.R.S.S” in the French 1975 edition.
All I can say for now about this source is that no such case appears in the French edition. This was not surprizing to me since this books was about UFOs in the Eastern European countries and the U.S.S.R.
Of course, in may be that the case appeared in the first Dutch editions only, especially since its title means “UFO's in the East and West”...
I will label the case “insufficient information” for now, as I do not have the primary source, and as I found no other source - the only other source I found merely citing Winkler's summary.
Insufficient information.
