In their 1979 ook "La Grande Peur Martienne" ("The great Matian Scare"), the "skeptical" ufologists Gérard Barthel and Jacques Brucker quooted an article of the newspaper L'Echo du Ribéraccois for October 8, 1954, adding the mention "Ste-Aulaye, 0. 30.":
"Mr. and Mrs. Vergnaud, directors of the municipal Hall who, coming back from Montpan, returned on their premises in Saint-Aulaye, saw in the sky a luminous machine which advanced very quickly while leaving trails seeming to be sparks or fire."
They gave as explanation that the case "does not deserve comment."
