The regional newspaper La Voix du Nord, in the local issue of Avesnes for October 6, 1954, reported that "a few days ago", around 8:45 p.m., a motorist from Sous-le-Bois, accompanied by a friend, driving on the road from Valenciennes to Bavay, while he was between Wargnies-le-Petit and Boiscrète, was hampered by a bright light taking his car from the rear in a beam of light.
Believing he was being followed by a powerful car (he was traveling at 130 km per hour), the motorist slowed down and rolled over to the right. As he was still enveloped in the beam of light, he stopped on the roadside to find the cause of the mysterious glow, but the dazzling clarity suddenly disappeared.
The driver and his passenger, described as "people who have their feet firmly planted on the ground" searched the surroundings in vain, without forgetting the sky, but saw absolutely nothing. They insisted that they had not been the victims of an illusion.
[Ref. vdn1:] NEWSPAPER "LA VOIX DU NORD":
A few days ago, around 8:45 p.m., a motorist from Sous-le-Bois, accompanied by a friend, driving on the road from Valenciennes to Bavay, was hampered by a bright glow taking his car from behind in a light beam, while he was between Wargnies-le-Petit and Boiscrète.
Believing he was followed by a powerful car (the Maubeugeois was already driving at 130) the motorist slowed down and pulled to the right. As he was still enveloped in the beam of light, he stopped on the roadside to check the cause of this mysterious glow, but the dazzling clarity suddenly disappeared.
The driver and his passenger - people who have their feet firmly planted on the ground - searched the surroundings in vain, without forgetting the sky! But they saw absolutely nothing. They claim that they were not the toys of an illusion.
The mystery remains unresolved...
Due to the lack of a date, it is not possible to link the thing to a known meteor, but this remains a possibility.
