The regional newspaper La Voix du Nord published on October 8, 1954, an article claiming that at the exit of the harbor of Calais, the ship "Veland" which had brought a cargo of ore, had "almost created a nocturnal hallucination."
In fact, its dark fireplace surrounded by a bright red circle of "luminous paint" could have, in the distance and in the dark, created a misinterpretation.
[Ref. lvn1:] NEWSPAPER "LA VOIX DU NORD":
At the exit of the harbor of Calais, the ship "Veland" which had brought a cargo of ore, nearly created a nocturnal hallucination: its chimney is, indeed, surrounded by a circle of bright red color which is a luminous painting...
At night... this gleam shines on the sky and from far away, including the Faidherbes and George V bridges, it looked like a little ring of ruby suddenly immobilized above the ship, since the rest of the chimney remained in the dark!
This is a "negative case" since neither the witness nor any ufologist thought it was really a flying saucer.
We understand that a certain journalist saw this and found here an opportunity both to amuse the readers, and to offer a possible explanation of "saucers"; which is not useless.
But I was unable to find any photos of the famous freighter, unfortunately.
