In 2019, I found a Website by one Jacques Schweitzer, resident of the Aube department, who wrote articles about events in this department.
One of his articles was about the UFO sightings in the Aube, and one of the cases was that of August 4, 1954, at 10 p.m., in Romilly-sur-Seine: a couple and their 9-year-old daughter observed a kind of disk "as huge as the moon projecting an orange glow". The phenomenon seemed to stop above Gélannes, before "deflating quickly"
[Ref. jcr1:] JACQUES SCHWEITZER:
On August 4, 1954, at 10 p.m., in Romilly-sur-Seine, a couple and their 9-year-old daughter observed a kind of disk "as huge as the moon projecting an orange glow". The phenomenon seems to stop above Gélannes, before "deflating quickly"
[jcr1] did not indicate a source for this report which seems to be missing in the ufology literature; I guess it came from some local Press source.
The phenomenon reminds me of a "red Moon" in the process of setting. We have a date, an hour, a direction, so this is a possibility I can check.
The direction of observation turns out to be rather imprecise, given the extent of Romilly-sur-Seine, but it can be seen that it would be roughly towards the Southwest.
It just so happens that on that evening at 10 p.m. the Moon was passing below the horizon, in the direction 249°; which matches the report.
So I think these people probably saw a red Moon setting.
