The regional newspaper Le Quotidien de la Haute-Loire for September 23, 1954, reported that "Saturday", thus on September 19, 1954, between 5:00 p.m. and 5:30 p.m., while he was at one of the windows of the apartment he occupies on the third floor of a building at 1, rue des Tables, in Le Puy-en-Velay, Mr. Breysse, a commercial representative, was able to observe, like many of his neighbors, "the passage of a mysterious apparatus, in the horizon located for him, between Vourzac and the Denise."
The newspaper said that "this craft, which seemed very distant, was moving slowly. Affecting the shape of a cigar cut in two, it advanced the pointed side in the back of this craft which shone in the setting sun and appeared slightly golden. No sound was perceived by Mr. Breysse, but the latter, who moreover specifies that it could not be an illusion, adds that given the apparent distance, no noise could have reached him. Finally! Le Puy has a cigar and many will envy Mr. Breysse to have seen it."

Saturday, between 05:00 P.M. and 05:30 P.M., while he was at one of the windows of the apartment which he lives in, on the second floor of a building at 1a rue des Tables, in Puy, Mr. Breysse, sales agent, was in position to observe (as did several of his neighbors) the passage of a mysterious machine, in the horizon located for him between Vourzac and La Denise. This machine, which appeared very distant, moved slowly. Affecting the shape of a cigar cut into two, it advanced with its pointed end at the back. A smoke escaped during a short moment from this apparatus which was shining in the setting sun and appeared slightly gilded. No noise has been perceived by Mr. Breysse, but he, which besides specifies that it could not have been an illusion, adds that being given the apparent distance, no noise could have reached him. Finally! Puy has its cigar and many will envy Mr. Breysse for having seen it.

The report is quite typical of the press reports of the time: the silly remarks on the "chance" the witness had takes precedence over the collection of the information itself, such as the duration of observation, which would have helped to determine what it was or was not:
