The weekly newspaper L'Auvergnat de Paris for October 23, 1954, reported that "Friday", the population of Fons was very intrigued by the presence of a mysterious craft seeming to be motionless to a very great heiht in the sky, but that, information taken, it was simply a weather balloon.
[Ref. lap1:] NEWSPAPER "L'AUVERGNAT DE PARIS":
FONS. - Friday, the population was very intrigued by the presence of a mysterious craft seeming to be motionless at a very great height in the sky. Information taken, it was simply a weather balloon.
As L'Auvergnat de Paris for Saturday, October 23, 1954, gave the date as "Friday", one may think that the sighting date would be October 22, 1954. However, some other observations of this balloon in the same region are dated "Friday 15"in the same newspaper, and this was indeed the day it was spotted over southern and Central France.
It was a big high altitude balloon for cosmic rays study launched by the University of Padua in Italy.
See also what ufologist Aimé Michel said about it in 1958 and the 1968 note about it by ufologist Raymond Veillith.
