In his 1958 book on the French saucer flap of 1954, Aimé Michel reported that on October 14, 1954, at 06:30 p.m., in Chardonnay near the city of Tournus, two vintagers, Messrs Charles and Varot, returned from their work when they saw a reddish disc passing in the sky and disappearing behind a hill.

Godelieve van Overmeire indicates that in 1954, on October 14, in France, in Chardonnay, "Misters Charot and Varot, vintagers, see a reddish disc passing; which disappears behind a hill."

Luc Chastan indicates in his database that in the Saone et Loire in Chardonnay on October 14, 1954 at 18:30 hours "Two witnesses, coming back from their work, observed a reddish disc passing in the sky and disappearring behind a hill."
