Ufologists Gérard Barthel and Jacques Brucker, in their 1979 book "La Grande Peur Martienne" ("The Great Martian Scare"); which was intended to demonstrate that all French reports of 1954 were either misinterpretations or hoaxes, indicate that on October 11, 1954. the Sud-Ouest newspaper reported this observation of the day before, which is to them an example that the reported shapes were whimsical:
"A hunter in company of a comrade saw at rifle range a machine in the shape of a grand piano. On the top two glazed cupolas let filter verdigris gleams, on the sides, port-holes through which yellow rays filtered. At the back two kinds of exhaust pipes. The craft was motionless within 50 meters of them after a fulgurating descent, then made some circles and went away again vertically."
